There are many garages, even, who don’t know what ADAS calibration is, so it’s little wonder that the vast majority of modern vehicles have no idea either. But don’t worry, here Iain from A1 ADAS Solutions explains some of the basics:
Most modern cars are now equipped with Advanced Driver Assist Systems (ADAS). ADAS are a group of electronic components such as sensors and cameras that assist drivers in various ways during a vehicle’s operation, such as hazard avoidance, parking and maintaining a constant speed.
During the course of 2022, it will become mandatory for eleven Advanced Driver Assist Systems to be fitted on all newly manufactured vehicles, so demand for ADAS programming and calibration is only going to grow.
It’s obvious that if a vehicle has been involved in a road traffic collision, however minor, its ADAS sensors and cameras could easily be knocked out of calibration. But regular ADAS calibration is a vital part of routine maintenance too; a full calibration should be carried out at least every 3 years as a minimum. It’s like any other part of the vehicle and should be checked regularly.
In short, all over your vehicle. At the front, the rear and on both sides so that data can be captured from all around your vehicle to inform you of what is going on around you – 360°. Your car or van will then warn you of any hazards and on some models take automatic evasive action.
Yes. Parking sensors are commonplace now and have been for a while. They now form part of a much more complex and advanced ADAS on newer cars.
A car or van purchase will be driven by budget, in almost every case. If you are in a position financially to purchase a new or newer vehicle it will have a more advanced ADAS, which is beneficial if possible. ADAS is proven to greatly reduce the chance of road traffic collisions, saving lives and people from serious injury.
